To remedy bad breath it is to check their health. Today, I will tell you 9 ways to remedy bad breath in children.

9 ways to treat bad breath in children

Make a habit of brushing teeth regularly

One of the biggest causes of bad breath is that teeth are not brushed in appropriate way. If they don’t brush teeth or brushing is not enough, food debris is left in mouth and bacteria grow, causing bad smell.

Also it can cause cavity and gum inflammation, which are also causes of bad breath. It is important to make them habit of brushing teeth. It is ideal to brush after each meal, but at least twice a day, after breakfast and before going to bed, should be done.

Finishing and checking the brushing

You brush their teeth when they are babies, but don’t you leave on them once they are older?

Not like adults, children can’t brush well, less than we expect. Until they are around 10 years old, adults should do finishing at the end.

If children are old enough to refuse finishing, just check to see if they are brushing thoroughly.

Make a habit of flossing

How well they thoroughly brush their teeth, there are often some food debris left between teeth and cause bad breath.

Also they can cause cavity, so make a habit of using dental floss from childhood. General stores and drug stores have floss for children.

For small children, adult should do it for them.

Gently brush tongue

Same as adults, children’s tongue sometimes turn white. It is called coated tongue, caused by old mucous, germs and food debris. Coated tongue is the direct cause of bad breath as well, so it is recommended to clean it few times a week.

However, children’s tongue is very delicate, so use tongue cleaner for children and gently stroke the surface, rather than scrubbing. There are some tongue cleaners children can use for their own, but make sure for them to use in eyes of an adult.

Remove dental tartar periodically

Debris left on surface of teeth or between teeth is called plaque. When plaque is left over time and hardens, it is called dental tartar. Once tartar builds up, plaque gets easier to pile up.

Plaque is a cluster of germs grown with food debris. Therefore tartar is the nest of bacteria and cause of bad breath. Dental tartar can pile up to some level, despite how well you brush teeth and it’s the same for children.

You can’t remove tartar by yourself, so see the dentist once or twice a year to have mouth checked and to remove dental tartar.

Know the cause of mouth breathing

Sometimes children keep their mouth open. That’s because they are breathing through mouth. Mouth breathing is another big cause of bad breath. As they breathe, mouth dries and saliva decreases.

Saliva has the function to wash away germs which cause bad breath, so if saliva decreases, the bad smell gets worse. If your children are always suffering stuffed nose, problem with nose such as rhinitis is the cause of mouth breathing.

Nasal disorders can be causes of bad breath, so it is recommended to see otolaryngologist or pediatrics.

Improve mouth breathing with chewing

If cause of mouth breathing is not nasal disorders, maybe muscle around mouth is weak and chewing force is weak as well. If chewing is too weak, saliva is not secreted enough. To prevent children’s bad breath and insist saliva secretion, it is important to chew well.

Firm and crunchy foods are recommended.

-Raw vegetables: require chewing and rich in dietary fiber, which makes movement of intestines better and prevents bad smell from them.
-Fruits: generally has deodorant effect, especially apples
-(Dried) kelp: require chewing, and just having it in mouth can insist saliva secretion

Drink proper amount of water

With dried mouth, saliva decreases and smell gets stronger. It is same when hungry. By drinking a little bit of water, bad breath can be prevented for a while.

When children are concentrated on something, they are likely to forget about thirst and hunger. Adults should keep in mind to have them drink properly.

Limit sweet juices

It is important to drink something, but juices and soft drinks containing a lot of sugar are not recommended. They can cause cavity as well. Followings are recommended.

-Water, sugar-less isotonic drink
-Vegetable juice
-100% pure fruit juice: especially apple juice has high deodorant effect

For vegetable and fruit juices, choose sugar-free products. Vegetables and fruits naturally contain some sugar, so should be careful about amount to drink.
