Prevent worsening and troubles of diseases by checking baby’s bad breath.

9 ways to prevent ill by baby’s bad breath

Use cheesecloth to wipe mouth

Baby’s bad breath is hardly related to serious illness, but keeping mouth clean is a very important aspect.
Babies can’t take care of their mouth by themselves, so it is good to check and clean in morning, day, and night.

If your baby is still drinking milk, you are recommended to wipe mouth with wet, clean cheesecloth after drinking milk.
If teething already, wipe them as well.

Brush teeth neatly

If your baby is getting teeth, you should brush them thoroughly especially before going to bed.
Germs are likely to increase while sleeping, and taking care of mouth before going to sleep can prevent increase of germs to certain extent.

However, children, especially babies, hate brushing teeth. To keep mouth open with something in it requires great concentration for little kids.
You may struggle to have their mouth open, so you can start with letting them get used to having mouth touched. Don’t force them to open mouth.

If you force them, they will hate to have teeth brushed and they might start crying by just touching mouth.
This is opposite effect and will have great influence on teeth brushing in future, so don’t force them and gradually make them get used to it.
Even if their breath smells bad, you don’t need to use tooth paste or gel. Just gently brush and make sure not to hurt gums.
To make them get used to brushing, you can do finishing brush after lunch as well.

If you can’t brush well, amount of saliva still increases by chewing tooth brush, and prevents dry mouth which is a cause of bad breath.

Be careful with mutans bacteria

Most newborn babies don’t have mutans bacteria, which is a cause of cavity.

However, some of them suffer cavities after getting teeth. The reason is not bad brushing by mother.
If a spoon used by family members who have mutans bacteria is used to baby, bacteria is transferred.

Most adults have mutans bacteria in mouth. It produces acid from sugar in mouth and dissolves teeth, and hard to remove with tooth brush. I understand that you adore your baby, but feeding from your spoon or chewing foods in small pieces before feeding should be avoided.

Cavity can cause other diseases, so be careful with small things and prevent beforehand.

Be careful with stuffed nose

When nose is stuffed, babies breathe with mouth. This creates good environment for germs to increase in mouth, so it should be avoided as much as possible.
Sometimes stuffed nose can be caused by virus of a cold, so you should check baby’s physical change.
Immunity (resistance capacity) is not enough for babies. Their immunity is developed by breastfeeding from mother.
If this is not enough, they may often become ill.

Some mothers quit breastfeeding and change to powdered milk soon, but you should give breast milk as much as possible. You can also dilute it.
Breast milk is also related to immunity problems in future.
There are great differences in immunity between who grew with enough breast milk or not.
To give strong immunity to baby as well as to prevent a cold caused by bad breath, please pay close attention to baby’s health condition as well as feed breast milk.

Amount of saliva secretion

As amount of saliva decreases, bad breath is likely to occur. Especially breath after waking up often have problem not only with babies but also with children and adults.

Secretion of saliva decreased greatly while we are asleep and our mouth is dried, causing bad smell. What you should be careful is that if your baby is having similar symptom when having fever or a cold.

If bad breath worsens for babies, it can cause tonsillitis and sinusitis. If you realize bad breath when baby has fever or symptoms of cold, please see pediatrics or otolaryngologist.

Saliva helps to digest foods as well as to increase a blood sugar level by chewing and prevents overeating.
It also washes food debris and keeps our mouth clean, so decrease of saliva means decrease of cleaning of mouth.
Saliva has important functions as mentioned, so it is important to avoid dry mouth of baby.

Effect of teethers

It is often said that teether is unsanitary and greatly influence teeth alignment, and many mothers try to take it away from their babies from early times. However, teether has effect to train muscles inside of mouth and also has exercising effect indispensable for development of tongue.

It is also a good way to have a memory of breathing with nose, not with mouth, to babies, so teether is not always a bad thing.

Of course, using it for a long time possibly makes a habit of crying when not having it, causes finger sucking, and effects teeth alignment. Each mother should think about a good time to take teether away from their babies.

There are meanings and purposes for all things, and teether has its purpose as well.
Babies chew things out of curiosity, and chewing develops mouth and prevents bad breath. Please make them chew.

Lack of water and drooling

Along with saliva, water should be given to protect mouth from dryness.

Milk and water for babies and lukewarm water or tea after eating for children getting teeth. It is important to wash debris and moisture inside of mouth. Moisture prevents stickiness of mouth and throat refreshes as well, so it will prevent mouth breathing.

And, one of the most common problem of babies, drooling! It is also doubted as a cause of bad breath.
Especially after 3 to 5 months after birth, babies start to drool a lot. When they are at this period, it is better to wipe drool frequently.

Ventilation of the room

Ventilation is very important. Babies’ mouth breathing is caused by stuffed nose due to a cold, but also caused by bad air of the room. Air gets dusty with bad ventilation and causing them stuffed nose, leading to mouth breathing.

Make sure to ventilate often and keep the air clean to prevent babies from stuffed nose.
One thing you need to be careful is ventilation in winter. Never leave babies alone in a cold room while ventilate.

They will catch a cold. When ventilating, take them to a warm room with you.

Tongue coating

Coated tongue is another cause of babies’ bad breath. From 3 to 5 months after birth, their foods start to change to baby foods and food debris and germs will cause coated tongue.
Therefore as I mentioned earlier, use clean cheesecloth to wipe teeth and tongue.
Don’t be nervous too much and scrub hard. Just wiping is good enough to remove most debris and prevent bad breath.

If you have antibacterial cheesecloth, it is effective to use as well.
